The RFPs we use today are often borrowed from our friends or found online. These are great ways to help ensure success, but how good are they, really? We reviewed and graded hundreds of public RFPs and there is a common theme. Our multi-university study found that the most successful contracts simplified the selection process, restructured the interviews to focus on project execution, and instituted performance metrics.

Jake Smithwick, PhD, MPA

Dr. Jake Smithwick is a researcher and educator in construction project delivery and facility management at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. He also serves on the board of directors for the Center for Procurement Excellence. Jake has worked on a variety of projects, totaling more than $575 million in value, with 25 public and private owners. His industry experience also includes field inspection of nearly 2,000 waterproofing systems (74 million square feet) across the United States, and six years in the U.S. Air Force Reserve (civil engineering squadron).
