The Journal of Contract Management

Check out the Journal of Contract Management today! One of NCMA’s top member benefits, it is the only journal specifically designed for contract management professionals. As a professional association, NCMA believes the knowledge of our membership is a powerful resource. We know that our members deserve the most practical, informative, and effective benefits.

Established in 1966, the Journal is relevant to both private and public sectors. Whether you’re involved in government or commercial contracting, you’ll find the research, proven best practices, and current issues relevant to your career. The Journal's editorial scope spans a wide-range of topics in the field. It strives to comprehensively cover the contract management discipline by publishing conceptual, empirical, and practical application manuscripts that demonstrate substantial development, appropriate methodology, proven best practices, and value-added topic areas.

Your knowledge and expertise helps develop this professional publication by linking scholarly research with practice. People from the nation’s leading companies and colleges have added high-quality, professional-level articles to the Journal. We encourage you and your colleagues in contract management to contribute to your profession.

Current Journal articles can be found online (on this site, under Publications).

Certification

Certification is a mark of distinction. It sets the credentialed individual and his/her workplace apart from others in the same profession. A certified individual communicates that he or she has attained a certain level of expertise and is committed to maintaining the highest level of professionalism.

Certification provides a direct link between the individual in the workplace and the rest of the professional community. This link provides support, guidance, and opportunity. Certification increases and enhances competition in the labor market. Employers also enjoy a level of assurance with respect to a certified individual’s knowledge, application of that knowledge, and continued professional development.

NCMA’s certification program, in particular, sharpens candidates’ focus. Recertification continues to hone that focus and maintain or increase the candidate’s professional role in the organization.

  • Personal satisfaction: I am truly a "professional," not merely someone who works in a professional field;
  • Peer recognition: You are truly a "professional," not merely someone who works in a professional field;
  • Most career opportunities: Increasing number of employers stating CCCM, CFCM or CPCM "desired," "highly desired," or even "required" on job postings;
  • Increasing number of number of employers using NCMA certification as a differentiator in promotion to leadership and management positions within the Contract management field; and
  • Significantly higher career earnings: NCMA’s 2005, 2006, and 2007 Salary Surveys of over 12,000 contract management professionals showed that NCMA certified professional earn on average $10,000 to $30,000 more than their uncertified peers.

While NCMA certification programs are open to non-members, NCMA members receive substantial discounts on certification fees and certification study materials. Read more about how NCMA’s certification programs can make a difference in your career.

If you have any questions for Certification, please call 1-800-344-8096 or email us at certification@ncmahq.org.

 Volunteerism

The Engine that Powers NCMA

NCMA is implementing a major volunteer drive. If you have never volunteered out of fear of over-committing yourself, you should know there are ways for you to contribute without taking on overall ownership of a function. Or, if you are ready to develop your leadership skills, step up to a leadership position. You can also contribute through new technology NCMA has implemented from the convenience of your desk or home. We want to emphasize that this is not a "one-way street"-being a volunteer isn't just for NCMA's benefit. It is a great way for you to develop new skills, network and meet the people that matter to your career, and achieve a sense of accomplishment in a job well done.

NCMA is comprised of 142 local chapters across the United States and internationally. Each chapter is led and operated by volunteer members, with roles ranging from chapter leadership to occasionally serving as an assistant at chapter events. To help your local chapter, contact your chapter president, or update your volunteer interests under your member profile online under the "My Preferences & About Me" tab.

Contract Management News

Contract Management News

Contract Management News (CMNews) is NCMA’s flagship newsletter. E-mailed bimonthly to all members, it contains the latest industry news, featured articles from Contract Management magazine, information about upcoming NCMA conferences and educational programs, recommended reading, and more.

If you prefer to get your e-mail in text format, CM News will not arrive in a heap in your inbox; we design the text version ourselves so that you won’t have to suffer through an “interpretation.” And, if you ever miss an issue or don’t have it handy, the latest issue is always available online in the same location.

Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice

In spring 2008, NCMA will launch Communities of Practice, which will be more relevant to targeted groups identified by the highest areas of interest indicated in the 2006 NCMA Membership Survey. The Communities of Practice will inform, educate, and connect members interested in these specific areas of concentration.

Communities of practice membership will be in addition to your chapter membership and will align with your current membership expiration date. Membership to the communities will include expanded learning opportunities and networking within the targeted areas of interest. The communities will include:

  1. A dedicated Web site with news items,
  2. Related links,
  3. Fully searchable library,
  4. Discussion forum,
  5. Listservs,
  6. A monthly e-newsletter,
  7. Access to subject matter experts and online resource guide, and
  8. A quarterly e-zine with articles specific to your topic of interest.

Individuals who participate fully in learning communities gain direct access to the distributed wisdom and intelligence of that community and will be able to continually apply learning from the community directly to their own context. They enhance their ability to benchmark against the rest of the industry.

Stay tuned for more information about the new NCMA Communities of Practice, expected to roll out spring 2008!

Chapter Affiliation

The chapter is a member benefit that adds value to the association by providing opportunities to members for networking, information on the profession, and educational forums that lead to career enhancement, in a local setting, tailored to local needs.

Chapters provide structure for the connection of members at the grassroots level. Chapters provide members current, professional (contract management-related) information at chapter meetings, in newsletters, listservs, and Web sites. Chapters help their members achieve certification by assisting with their preparation efforts.

Monthly chapter meetings are an excellent opportunity for networking. Where else can you sit next to a vice president of contracts, or the senior acquisition executive of a federal agency, and have an opportunity to chat over cocktails or dinner? Networking in person, even in the information age, remains an essential member benefit.

For more information on chapters, contact the Chapter Relations Manager at 800-344-8096, ext. 419.
