House Passes Bill Transferring Authority for Processing Wage Claims on Public Works Projects from GAO to DOL

On September 10, 2013, the House passed the “Streamlining Claims Processing for Federal Contractor Employees Act” (H.R. 2747). If enacted, this bill would transfer authority from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to the Department of Labor (DOL) for processing wage claims brought by mechanics or laborers on federal public works projects. Currently, the authority for enforcing the relevant wage and hour laws is vested in DOL. Consolidating authority for enforcement and claims processing within one department would reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies. This bill was received in the Senate on September 11, 2013. It has been referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
