House Introduces Bill to Create Government Waste Reduction Board

On February 6, 2013, Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) introduced the “Government Waste Reduction Act” (H.R. 530). This bill would establish an independent “Government Waste Reduction Board” that would be charged with reporting to Congress on implementing the recommendations of the Government Accountability Office’s report, “Opportunities to Reduce Potential Duplication in Government Programs, Save Tax Dollars, and Enhance Revenue.” Any advice by the board would be prohibited from recommending cuts in benefits for seniors, veterans, or members of the armed forces and their families. The bill was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
