Hagel Still Reviewing Sexual Assault Case

April 2, 2013

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is still reviewing an Air Force sexual assault case where a jury’s guilty verdict was overturned by a military commander.

Hagel has also not made any decisions yet after requesting a broader review of the military’s judicial rules that allow for commanders to single-handedly overturn verdicts, Pentagon press secretary George Little said Tuesday.

Hagel ordered the pair of reviews after lawmakers and sexual assault victims’ advocates expressed outrage at a sexual assault case from Aviano Air Base in Italy where Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin tossed out the guilty verdict against Lt. Col. James Wilkerson.
